Give Your Hair A Break
Wearing protective styles are great for their ability to help retain hair length, maintain moisture, and reduce breakage. However, wearing them too long can cause more harm than good. Read our tips on how to give your hair a break.
Why it's important...
Leaving in a protective style for longer than you should can result in buildup on your scalp. Protective styles also put tension on your hair and scalp, which can lead to breakage over time. A protective style shouldn't break your hair, but leaving it in for too long can.
How long should a protective be worn?
We recommend not wearing braids, locs, or twists for more than 6-8 weeks.
Take a break between each style
Allow two or three weeks between your protective styles.
Take the style down gently
- Be patient and gentle when removing your protective style.
- Don’t pull or tug on your hair, it will create damage.
- Once you've undone your protective style carefully detangle your hair.
- Section your hair in small sections and using a wide-tooth comb, comb from the ends of the hair toward the scalp.
Treat your hair afterwards
- Take the time to deep condition your hair.
- We recommend using an intense nourishing mask that strengthens the hair's inner structure while adding shine. Try: Mielle Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner
- Get a trim to remove dead ends and balance new growth.
- Review your hair’s state before you install another protective style.
